While norms of what constitutes ‘academic citizenship’ are increasingly global, academic freedom is under acute threat due to censorship and persecution of academics by state and non-state actors in various locations around the world. This roundtable will focus on specific situations in Bangladesh, China, Turkey and Uganda, while considering what universities and academics outside these countries can/should do to respond, with a spotlight on initiatives at the University of Edinburgh.

China: Dr. Tim Pringle, SOAS, editor of the China Quarterly
Tim Pringle is senior lecturer in labour, social movements and development in the Department of Development Studies, SOAS, University of London. His work focuses on labour relations, trade unions and labour and social movements in China and Vietnam, as well as labour migration in China. He has been an active trade unionist since he started working. Since January 2017, he has been the editor of The China Quarterly.
Bangladesh: Dr. Shuchi Karim, University of Dhaka, visiting scholar at Radboud University, Nijmegen
Shuchi Karim is a Bangladeshi feminist researcher, academician, development worker and an activist. She has been working in the field of gender, education and development since 1996, and has been teaching at the tertiary level since 2000. Her specialization areas are: Gender, sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, adolescent and youth health and education, women empowerment, sexuality rights and social movements. Currently she is working as a Researcher in Gender and Diversity studies, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands.
Uganda: Dr. Zoe Marks, University of Edinburgh
Zoe Marks is a Chancellor’s Fellow/Lecturer in the School of Social and Political Science, and Director of the Global Development Academy and of the MSc in African Studies. Her research focuses on conflict, gender, and post-conflict development in Sub-Saharan Africa, and she has also been involved in debates on decolonizing the academy and promoting ethical research.
Turkey: Dr. Olga S. Hünler, University of Bremen , formerly at Izmir University of Economics
Olga S. Hünler is The Philipp Schwartz Fellow of the University of Bremen (founded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), in the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies. She was an assistant professor of psychology at the Izmir University of Economics, and she was forced to resign in 2016. She is one of the signatories of the internationally well-known Academics for Peace petition.
